Welcome to the Ephemera Newsletter, chingudeul / 친구들 (Korean for “friends”).

August looms. We’re looming (in so far as we dare) an insight cloth, inciting or exciting, as the fleece may be, the creative and productivity ethers of the heart and mind. How else to comprehend inventiveness, the feels in the bursting-forth moments—an itchiness in the finger tips, an energy in the bones—when ideas and words flow, the fecundity of invention turns us, humbly, into avatars. Praise be those Godly flows. The heat of summer stoking (hopefully) our individual, discrete ambitions. Keep finding ways to access thought, know self, use the confluence in your practice wisely and profligately. Refine later. Bloom and bubble with the aid of Spoon’s dreamy music, and explore identity through homage of the exalted with this week’s artist and painter, Cobi Moules. Brewing, we bring you 3 magazines, 3 opportunities, 3 jobs and a quick look at the Booker Prize Longlist. Note our residency application deadline is July 31 and another Francine Prose book rec: What to Read and Why.

Yet, we’re not all flashes of epiphanic muscle flexing. Those elative moments invigorate and motivate, to be sure. Let’s not forget, while the torrent of July takes us up, that butt-bruising seatedness, the art of sedentariness is the unlikely (plenty of cliche to go around) anchoring hero, the true seamstress (we laud this profession maximally) of the final draft of our imaginings. This process, too, requires a focus state albeit perhaps not as aggressive, not as gut-swirling, not as pugilistic. A more reposing, turning down and in, smallness, the mousy crumb collecting of our more learned selves; the feast of thought ends (goodnight moon) and the reticent we scurries and shakes, thinking (rodently) about collecting the best morsels, solo, in combo. Akin the acts of nibbling and stitching. Quiet, please. The sculpting of effulgent-off-the-stove text requires it—do not disturb the seated, for we hunker down and skitter at too much noise, skirr when interrupted. But lo, your presence steels. In faith, we interrupt you, graciously, with a friendly mailing and hope you’ll be brave and share our mousings. Comment and quip below.
