Welcome to the Ephemera Newsletter, Namana! (Malagasy for “friends”).
Dear Readers,
Welcome and gratitude for your presence. September & October we’ll be making the case to become paid subscribers. We appreciate the 25 folks who have already done so very very much. Thank you! Most of our yearly subscribers have received the free submission link to Write-In Residency and several have already applied.
Please consider becoming a paid subscriber to help us continue to deliver our newsletter content as well as improve & expand. We’d like to reach the modest number of 50 subscribers in short order. We’d appreciate your help.
Housekeeping: This letter may get cut off by email providers. Please make sure to click through for the full experience.
As a note, this week’s letter has a paywall.
As a reminder, the next few will be paywalled until October’s free issue.
As an enticement, yearly subscribers will submit free to our Write-In Residency 2x per year. We’re reading apps this fall to award 2 applicants.
The yearly comes with very clear added value. The monthly with full access to every issue and archives. Bedankt. Grazie. Teşekkürler. Cảm ơn. Xiè xiè.
We will remind folks for a bit so thank you in advance for allowing us to make a case.
Ephemera
Phew, these cool mornings tickling ankles (if you get to wear that sort of thing to work) and ascending shins boil off by the burst of midday sun—still hot, still warm, summer’s still hanging on. Transition becoming more apparent this time of year. As such, we continue ours: from exploration and experience-farming to collecting, to summarizing, to accounting. We’ve recorded and now we assemble (maybe even break apart, mish-mashing everything in order to reassemble) and organize. Surely there’s still time for a last romp or gambol, but our practice needs focus again. We bid you, categorizing what we like and know and have learnt is important. We bid you, take your craft seriously. This is one of our main takeaways; we want fellow writers to keep on keeping on, to be purposeful, to continue always (making sure improvement and growth are regularly integrated). We carry on with delivering mantra and meditation, a mini-practicum garnished with nurturance. We carry to you an artist with synesthesia (Brea’n Thompson) who colorizes sound, and a musician pair experimenting in South American Electro New Wave. Transporting…3 zines with current calls, 3 awards with close deadlines, 3 recent job postings, a project from one of our readers; conveying…our new residency, an important MFA program for those in the early stages, and books and bouts of oomphing thought on creativity and writing minutia. Keep notes. Revisit your work. Don’t forget your fun-cool-epiphanic-piercing ideas. It’s always a good time to be deliberate with our work. You and your scratchings, you and your lines, how you build, flow, and execute…you and you are enough: Do. Make. Beget. Yield. Plumb. Fathom. Besplendor. Storm…
…Maelstrom internal. Steel yourself as a crucible for the fire of summer has been lit, has been brimming but benefits by being constrained whereby it becomes a more biddable & abiding blaze. Now, what ought we bestow our carnal kilns? First, the clays of recent experience, the strange & glassy experimental thoughts, too, the borrowed pebbles of other fantastic minds, the ores of philosophies. This is how we might make a sound into a color, a strange noise a stand-in for something more akin, mush sci-fi, noir, and family drama into a new…juxtapose a borrowed line with a strange bird and score a new type of metaphor…anew, anew! Let’s come back to the page renewed—conceptually speaking, folding novelty into tried and true. This is why we have format. This is why we mind definitions. But, too, why we break and breach. Too broken, maybe too, too bright. Too standard, maybe snoozily soporific. Employ the known at the behest of invention. And know, too, that crushing established structures requires a dangerous burn but when controlled, when marshaled with skill, can bestow a type of new beauty it might have been otherwise impossible to see (feel, hear, sense, touch, believe, imagine). We heat at your interaction, your generosity and realize our own metaphoric rise by your participation and subscription. Glaze us and others. Good embers to you and your bricks that constrain all that you seek to blast & mold, meld & amalgamate. Brim!
We’ll form by your appreciation!
Fankasitrahana! (Gratitude)
~We’re so happy you’re here!~
