We all need more time to read and write, find new books, and publishers. In that pursuit, we’re hosting The Write-In Residency. The Write In Residency will sponsor 2 individuals, where each winner is gifted a curated package of 10 new books in multiple literary genres each from a different independent publisher, a Moleskin & pen, and a $300 award to upgrade their writing nook or home office. It’s a staycation for the bookish!
**Update: The spring residency round 2 deadline is June 30. 1st round is closed.

We often overlook our own spaces and communities when we think of spending focused time away from daily work to catch up on our reading or writing. Ephemera understands how difficult it is to find a time and a place to write, to outfit our places according to our best intentions and most inspiring visions. We hope the residency will empower writers to focus on personal space and community engagement.
First round for the spring residency is May 31. We look to select 1 person to receive the books and honorarium from this pool of applicants.
All submissions will be considered for the 2nd round (i.e. first rounders are read twice).
Second and final round will close mid June.
Read below for last years recipients.
We reserve the right to wait until the close of the 2nd round to make our selections and may choose only 1 winner.
A sponsored staycation for the bookish!
Ephemera wants to help provide more opportunities for writers to distinguish themselves! Accessible residencies and prizes are important, and destination residencies favor a mobility we don’t all have. The Write-In Residency makes a new kind of residency available to all readers and writers, no matter where they live. Please email us at ephemera dot newsletter at gmail if you are under financial hardship to inquire about waiving the submission fee on a case by case basis. All financial hardship emails are private, and will never be shared outside of the Ephemera or Write In Residency editors and staff.
Ephemera will base our selections on writing samples submitted to the contest and the optional personal statement (let us know what you’d like to upgrade and how it might help, for instance). We will read submissions blind. Also we follow CLMP guidelines. We're looking for great, clever, polished work that shows promise and a love for craft!
More submission details are available on our submittable page when live (next event is now live).
Thank you for thinking of us and for looking into The Write In Residency. Proceeds will go to expand Ephemera’s newsletter and programming, and to The Write-In to continue to develop novel ways of linking writers during times of isolation and displacement, and ways of encouraging writers to embrace their lived-in, written-in spaces.
Thank you for supporting Ephemera! Gratitude!

Thank you to everyone who has previously submitted. There were many deserving applications! Actually, our hearts go out to folks. So many people could use a boost and we hope to be able to do more in the future, even expand the recipient pool to include smaller honorariums.
As a note, we’ll be running two residencies per year, one in the fall, and one in the spring. Happy writing!
Where do we apply?
Is this for fiction writing only?
